Best Road Trips in Sweden

Sweden offers some of Europe's most dramatic and least-crowded driving routes. With MovMor you can rent a car right where you land — or a few kilometres from your hotel — and set off the same afternoon.

The West Coast: Gothenburg to Strömstad

Drive north from Gothenburg on Road 160, hugging the Bohuslän coast. Stop at Marstrand for a swim, Fjällbacka for the ABBA connection (Agnetha grew up nearby), and Kosterfjord for some of Sweden's clearest water. The route is 170 km but easily stretches into two days with overnight stops in Smögen or Hamburgsund.

Best season: June to August. The coast is bleak but dramatic in winter too, if you want the roads to yourself.

The Inlandsvägen: Mora to Östersund

The Inlandsvägen (Inland Road) follows the Dalarna and Jämtland counties through a landscape that changes from birch forest to mountain plateau. The 300-km stretch between Mora and Östersund passes Fulufjället (Sweden's largest waterfall) and several Sami cultural sites. Pack a thermos — roadside cafés are scarce.

What to rent: An SUV or crossover is comfortable but not required. The road is paved throughout.

The High Coast: Härnösand to Örnsköldsvik

The UNESCO World Heritage High Coast is 130 km of dramatic cliffs, deep fjord-like inlets, and islands reachable by short ferry. Skuleskogen National Park offers day hikes with sea views. The region is reachable by overnight train from Stockholm, and several MovMor hosts are located in Härnösand and Kramfors.

Skåne Circuit: History and Castles

Sweden's southernmost county packs an unusual amount of medieval history and wine production into a relatively compact loop. Start in Malmö, drive east through Ystad (the fictional home of Wallander), north to Kristianstad, and back west via the Söderåsen ridge. Roughly 350 km, best done in two relaxed days.
